  • Fear or anxiety: If a dog feels uncertain or frightened by strangers, they may bark to keep the perceived threat at a distance. Body language like tucked tail, pinned ears, or cowering often accompanies fear barking.

  • Excitement and overstimulation: Some dogs bark because they’re excited to see someone. These barks tend to be high-pitched, jumpy, and accompanied by wagging and jumping.
